Donating food to your local food bank lets you give the gift of life!
As the lazy days at the beach, biking and hiking expeditions and roller skating at the park draw to a close with cooling weather, we all start to get into our preparations for the upcoming holiday season. When even people still considered to be in the ‘middle class’ are struggling with food and household expenses, we need to turn our attention to those less fortunate. Want to help others? Donating food is one of the best ways to do just that. You don’t have to be plush with money to give this gift of life. Remember, every little bit helps!
A recent news report revealed that 1 in 7 people in the U.S. lives at, or below the poverty line! This is a higher percentage than ever previously recorded, when statistics began being collected in the late 1950s. Millions of children go to bed hungry, right here in the U.S. That’s downright disgraceful.
Almost every community in the nation has a food bank to serve the poor. Donating food to food banks has been on a steady decline for the past couple of years. Perhaps with so many people who are having trouble making ends meet, potential food donors feel they have so little to donate, it will hardly make a difference. Don’t adopt that mindset! As with any other endeavor, we need to take a step at a time, as a society. When we do, all those steps add up! If you can afford to donate a single can of food or bag of flour, do it! Think of the difference it would make if every family in your town was donating food in the most modest amounts.
You may have noticed a small article in your local newspaper, reporting that food banks are facing a crises. Some food banks are being forced to close their doors, because their shelves are empty. This should never happen in a society as rich in resources as ours. Many government programs are now slated for tremendous cutbacks in the so-called ‘entitlement’ programs, which affect children, the elderly and the poor most of all.
If the government is abandoning the poor, we, the citizens, should all take it upon ourselves to make certain that these vulnerable people in our immediate community have enough to eat. Donating food is one of the easiest of grass roots programs to get going.
Start in your own cupboard. Can you spare a few cans of food, a loaf of bread or some milk for those who are truly doing without? You might also organize your church, synagogue or mosque to sponsor a food drive in your neighborhood. This is also a great project for teen clubs. The larger grocery chains are often generous sponsors of food drives. Upscale restaurants are also enthusiastic participants and will sometimes offer to host community dinners to feed the poor.

Stephanie Zubiri, executive Chef of the Modern day Epicurean Kitchen.
Food food. It’s no doubt the Filipinos’ most favored topic. Food preparation and eating has been the heart of any friends and family get together. Whether in a posh restaurant or even at our grandmother’s kitchen, we relish our food with gusto. Our most favorite meals are usually the ones made by our moms and dads, with no other dish capable to rival it. Nevertheless, an often repeated topic is, “Precisely why no Filipino food crafted its recognition within the international arena?”
Stephanie Zubiri, top chef of The Modern Epicurean Kitchen (MEK), believes that the strength of Filipino recipes, which lies in the informal and communal experience, could also be its Waterloo. “Filipino dishes isn’t concerned with serving courses-everything is delivered to the family table at once. It’s made without fresh herb choices to cleanse the palate or even to top the plate as a garnish.”
Standard Filipino food additionally falls short in fancy presentation. “The difficulty in advertising stems from the point that our recipes seem to be simple. Keep in mind, we eat with our eyes!” This particular feature could be related to our country’s lack of royal history, claims Stephanie, a History and Geography graduate of the Universite de Paris-Sorbonne. “Before the Spaniards arrived, everything we had were minor kingdoms. If you have a royal family, your recipes progress to please the king and queen.” To illustrate, Thai dishes always has elaborate carvings in their food of animals and flowers. Japanese cuisine is renowned for excellent display with fanned cuts, sculptured fruit and vegetables, using the plate like a frame of a wonderful photograph.
Professionally trained at Le Cordon Bleu Paris in oenological and culinary arts, Stephanie takes this as a test in her enterprise, the MPK or Modern Epicurean Kitchen. “We need to open up our dishes to be more appealing and fascinating. This enables us to become innovative and deconstruct the conventional dishes and blend it with assorted flavors to enhance its classic taste.”
In her Modern Epicurean Kitchen Active demonstration class entitled Updating The Filipino Classics, she cooked chicken thighs marinated in the flavours of the Southern Tagalog classic, the traditional Bicol Express.
Home chefs can begin doing this simply by adding refreshing herbs to decorate the flavor. “I encourage all of you to have fun in your kitchen. Serve these brand new meals as inspired fresh variations of the Filipino timeless classics.”

Because I had been eating the majority of my main meals at these restaurants, it drastically cut my intake of meat. In a short time, I was shedding pounds and feeling better than I had in a while. After I had gotten the knack for eating at restaurants healthy, I decided to try reintroducing some of my old restaurants while generating healthy choices.
I’d go out for Italian but, instead of having a pasta dish appetizer and a big steak for lunch, I would have a light pasta as my entire dinner at any Santa Barbara restaurants. In other cases, I would consume a big Caesar salad or a Greek village salad for a meal. I kept the vegetarian restaurants during my rotation. I discovered that I really liked them, and they also helped me with healthy eating.
While you are planning the best corporate event, make sure that you have the most important factor correct and that will be corporate event venues. Think of the corporate event as though you were planning your wedding. It must be unique, beautiful and give off a magical atmosphere.
You can go online and look for the most information you can find regarding venues in your area. Depending on your theme, you can choose the best venue for your needs. If you would like a jungle theme, a botanical garden should suffice and if you are looking at a cruise, renting a large houseboat would be the perfect venue for the event.
By looking at your budget, you will be able to decide on what details you will have at your venue. The budget must first cover the basics like the music, catering, seating and corporate gifts and you can then see how many extras like decorations and drinks you could cater for.
All these details will have to match the theme of the event, it will not look good if all the crockery is green but the theme is pink and white. Keep all the necessary details in the same color scheme as the theme to make for uniformity and flow.
The more you plan beforehand, the less you have to run around to get everything done on the morning of the function. The most intelligent decision will be to hire the help of a professional event planner. They will make sure that everything, even down to the last detail will be taken care of before, during and after the event. This will leave you more time to relax and enjoy yourself along with your guests.
Something very important to plan for is a corporate gift for each guest. We are not talking key rings either. Make sure it is something unique to your company but an item that each guest will find useful and interesting. Printed logos on coffee mugs and champagne glasses are a thing of the 80’s, so please forget that idea. Your gift to them will represent the value you see in them.
Make sure to have the athmosphere professional but fun at the same time. Make sure you have good entertainment suited to the theme and type of guests. Also, keep speeches down to a minimum. The catering should be something different as you are sure to know that you cannot impress with a dried out meatball. Think of hosting an exotic theme with food to compliment it.
When sifting through all the different corporate event venues and ideas, make sure to be original. If you choose a standard theme, try to change it a bit in order to create something that your guests will not soon forget.
